1898 Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs, C&W Singer/Banjo, b. West Norton, VA, USA. d. Feb. 7, 1971 (his birthday)
Biography
by John Bush
Dock Boggs was just one of the primeval hillbillies to record during the '20s, forgotten for decades until the folk revival of the '60s revived his career at the twilight of his life. Still, his dozen recordings from 1927 to 1929 are monuments of folk music, comprised of fatalistic hills ballads and blues like "Danville Girl," "Pretty Polly," and "Country Blues." Born near Norton, VA, in 1898, Boggs was the youngest of ten children. (He gained his nickname at an early age, since he was named after the doctor who delivered him.) Boggs began working in the mines at the age of 12. In what remained of his spare time, he began playing banjo, picking the instrument in the style of blues guitar instead of the widespread clawhammer technique.
Boggs began picking up songs from family members and the radio. He married in 1918 and began subcontracting on a mine until his wife's illness forced him to move back to her home. He worked in the dangerous moonshining business and made a little money playing social dances.
His big break finally came in 1927, when executives from the Brunswick label arrived in Norton to audition talent. He passed (beating out none other than A.P. Carter), and recorded eight sides in New York City for the label. Though they didn't quite flop, the records sold mostly around Boggs' hometown. He signed a booking agent, and recorded four more sides for W.E. Myer's local Lonesome Ace label. The coming of the Great Depression in late 1929 put a hold on Boggs' recording career, as countless labels dried up. He continued to perform around the region until the early '30s, however, when his wife forced him to give up his music and go back into the mines. Boggs worked until 1954, when mechanical innovations forced him out of a job.
Almost a decade later, in 1963, folklorist Mike Seeger located Boggs in Norton and convinced him to resume his career. Just weeks after their meeting, Boggs played the American Folk Festival in Asheville, NC. He began recording again, and released his first LP, Legendary Singer & Banjo Player, later that year on Smithsonian/Folkways. Two more LPs followed during the '60s, although, like his original recordings, they too were out of print not long after his death in 1971.
The revival of interest in early folk music occasioned by a digital reissue of Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music finally brought Boggs' music back to the shelves. In 1997, John Fahey's Revenant label released Complete Early Recordings (1927-1929), and one year later His Folkways Years (1963-1968) appeared.

Roy Claxton Acuff on Sep 15, 1903 in Maynardsville, TN
Died Nov 23, 1992 in Nashville

AMG Biography:

Roy Acuff was called the King of Country Music, and for more than 60 years he lived up to that title. If any performer embodied country music, it was Roy Acuff. Throughout his career, Acuff was a champion for traditional country values, enforcing his beliefs as a performer, a music publisher, and as the Grand Master of the Grand Ole Opry. Acuff was the first country music superstar after the death of Jimmie Rodgers, pioneering an influential vocal style that complemented the spare, simple songs he was performing. Generations of artists, from Hank Williams to George Jones, have been influenced by Acuff, and countless others have paid respect to him. At the time of his death in 1992, he was still actively involved in the Grand Ole Opry, and was as popular as ever.

Originally, Acuff didn't plan to be a singer. Born in the small town of Maynardville, TN, in 1903, Acuff sang in the church choir as a schoolboy, but he was more interested in sports, particularly baseball. Not only was he attracted to the sport, he had a wild streak -- after his family moved to Knoxville, he was frequently arrested for fighting. Acuff continued to concentrate on playing ball, eventually becoming strong enough to earn a tryout for the major leagues. However, that tryout never took place. Before he had a chance to play, he was struck by a severe sunstroke while he was on a fishing trip; after the sunstroke, Acuff suffered a nervous breakdown. While he was recovering, he decided that a career in baseball was no longer possible, so he decided to become an entertainer. He began to learn the fiddle and became an apprentice of Doc Hauer, a local medicine show man.

While traveling with the medicine show, Acuff learned how to be a performer -- he learned how to sing, how to imitate, how to entertain, how to put on a show. Soon, Acuff joined the Tennessee Crackerjacks, who had a regular slot on Knoxville radio station WROL. Although he was performing frequently, he wasn't making any significant headway, failing to become a star in Tennessee. One song changed that situation -- "The Great Speckled Bird," an old gospel tune that had become popular with the Church of God sect. After another radio entertainer wrote the words out to the song, Acuff began performing it in his shows. Quickly, he became popular throughout the eastern part of Tennessee and was asked to record the song by ARC, a record label with national distribution. Acuff headed north to Chicago for a recording session, which resulted in 20 different songs. In addition to "The Great Speckled Bird," he recorded "Steamboat Whistle Blues" and "The Wabash Cannonball," another Tennessee standard that featured the singer imitating the sound of a train whistle; he also made a handful of risqué numbers during these sessions, which were released under the name the Bang Boys.

In 1938, the Grand Ole Opry invited Acuff to audition for the show. During the show, he sang "The Great Speckled Bird" and became an instant hit, prompting the Opry to hire him full-time. Before he was given his regular slot, the Opry insisted that he change the name of his band to the Smoky Mountain Boys. The following year, Acuff reassembled his band, with the most notable addition being Bashful Brother Oswald (Pete Kirby), a dobro player who sang high harmonies.

Roy Acuff became a national superstar during the '40s, scoring a long string of hit records, which included the classics "The Wreck on the Highway," "The Precious Jewel," and "Beneath That Lonely Mound of Clay," among many others. During this time, he discovered that there was a potential gold mine in music publishing. Acuff had printed his own songbook, which sold a staggering 100,000 copies. Publishers in New York tried to acquire the rights to his songs, but the success of the songbook convinced Acuff to hold on to the songs and seek out the help of Fred Rose, a professional songwriter and pianist working in Chicago. The pair founded Acuff-Rose Publications in October 1942, using Acuff's songs as its base; Rose also added his songs, including "Faded Love," "Deep Water," and "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." Acuff-Rose was an immediate success, and over the next two decades many of the most popular songs and songwriters were the property of the company, including the songs of Hank Williams, the Louvin Brothers, Don Gibson, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, John D. Loudermilk, Boudleaux & Felice Bryant, and Redd Stewart & Pee Wee King's "Tennessee Waltz."

In the late '40s, Acuff continued to rule the country charts, as well as scoring a number of pop crossovers ("The Prodigal Son," "I'll Forgive You, But I Can't Forget"). For most of the '50s, he concentrated on touring -- he didn't have a single charting record between 1947 and 1958, returning with the Top Ten hit "Once More," as well as two other Top 20 singles, "So Many Times" and "Come and Knock." In 1962, he became the first living performer to be inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame. The '60s yielded some hits, yet he continued to concentrate on touring; by the end of the decade, he decided to leave the road, staying at the Grand Ole Opry.

The beginning of the '80s was a difficult period for Acuff, as he experienced the death of his wife and several longtime bandmembers, including pianist Jimmie Riddle and fiddler Howdy Forrester. In 1987, he released his final charting record, an inspirational duet with Charlie Louvin called "The Precious Jewel."

As his health began to decline in the late '80s, Acuff built a house near the Opry so he could greet friends and fans. He passed away in 1992, leaving behind a legacy that isn't limited to his music. Through his records, his performances, and Acuff-Rose, Roy Acuff has had an enormous effect on shaping the role of country music in the 20th century; it is hard to imagine the music without him.

Boone County rockabilly pioneer and cult music icon Hasil Adkins was
found dead at his home near Bull Creek on Tuesday. He was 68. Boone County
Sheriff¹s Deputy J.M. Thompson said friends discovered Adkins¹ body. ³They
had talked to him about 4:30 Monday afternoon, and they told him they¹d be
by on Tuesday,² Thompson said. When they knocked on the door, Adkins didn¹t
answer, so they went inside to check on the performer, who lived alone.
Thompson said Adkins¹ body was sent to the state Medical Examiner¹s Office,
but that he appeared to have died of natural causes. Adkins cut some minor
rockabilly records in the 1960s, but had little artistic success until he
was discovered by music cultists in the 1980s. During his lifetime, he
recorded thousands of scratchy, low-fidelity records on a primitive
reel-to-reel tape recorder in his living room. Many of his tunes, virtually
devoid of melody, were accompanied by Adkins¹ frenetic guitar wailing and
drum-pounding. He sent them to everyone ‹ including President Richard Nixon
‹ in an attempt to make the big time. ³One thing about Hasil¹s reel-to-reel
tapes: They¹ll have Cheese-Whiz and crumbs and dirt on them, so you have to
run them through once to transfer ¹em, then put the originals away,² Billy
Miller, whose Norton Records released much of Adkins¹ music, once said.
Adkins was playing by the age of 10. Convinced that Hank Williams played
all the instruments on his recordings and sang at the same time, Adkins
taught himself to simultaneously play drums, guitar or other instruments
while he screeched his high-pitched vocals. Adkins attracted a huge national
and international cult following of fans fascinated with his primitive,
highly emotional style. He toured the country extensively, and it was not
uncommon for fans to travel from Europe just to watch his antics. Adkins
was frequently too drunk to perform, but often did anyway. Legend has it
the singer was annoyed by a ceiling fan while trying to play at a club in
New York. Without missing a beat, he allegedly pulled out a pistol and shot
the offending fan to the ground. ³He¹s a wild man, but he is also a great
musician,² Miller said. ³A lot of people think he¹s just bashing away
because he goes way out of tune when he plays, but he actually has perfect
pitch. He¹ll break a string in a show and replace it with a piece of
fishing wire lying in the parking lot ‹ he might come home and have some
fishing line, a banjo string, some wire that was wrapped around a barrel
[six wires, none of which are guitar strings] but they¹re all tuned
perfectly.²

This guy plays every instrument and sings on every tune... banjo, fiddle, guitar and who knows what else? Check out his website www.eyelovemusic.com and read about his philosophy on music, the folk scene and variations in old recordings. There's also set a tour with artists from the Cold Mountain soundtrack and O' Brother Where Art Thou performing together... I'll post that later.

Down by deep water where sweet linden stand
I saw pretty Polly wringing her hands
The song that she sung made the whole grove to ring
My Billy has left me to fight for a king
And I wish the wars were all over

I stood in amaze to hear what she said
I'll follow my Billy whether living or dead
The notes that she sung were the nightingale's notes
How the lark and the linnet they warble their throats
And I wish the wars were all over

I said my dear Polly if you'll stay with me
I'll make you as happy as happy can be
Oh no then she said that never can be
I'll never be happy til my Billy I see
And I wish the wars were all over

Now from my parents I'll haste and away
I'll dress myself out in a young man's array
And every company that I pass by
I'll ask for my Billy or where he does lie
And I wish the wars were all over
I wish the wars were all over...

Check out Tim Eriksen's version on his solo album on Appleseed Records also if you still haven't got it yet, drop everything and buy the Cold Mountain soundtrack (ignore the last few tracks) you haven't heard anything until you've heard Tim Eriksen (Cordelia's Dad) and Jack White (White Stripes) singing and playing the most beautiful Appalachian mountain music ever.
